Hi, my name’s Brianna Henderson and I’m a licensed professional counselor and a registered play therapist at New Roots Counseling. I was just going to tell you a little bit about what to expect whenever you first start coming to play therapy.
The very first step is to have a parent intake and so that whichever guardians are looking over, the kiddos will come in and have a one-on-one session with the therapist to talk about everything going on, and that is without the child. After that, we can schedule sessions with your child and during those sessions, which will be 45 minutes long, the child will get to come in and play, and there’s really not big expectations for them. It’s their space to do what they would like.
Whenever a child comes in and throughout the time that they’re with us, they may have some hard sessions and may not want to talk about what’s going on in the session, and that’s okay. That’s something that is maybe really private to them if they’re working on something hard, and so we just ask that you really respect those boundaries, just like you would like somebody to respect your time if you have your own therapist, and that’s about it. So we look forward to meeting you!
