What is the difference between counseling and other types of mental health treatment?

There are several different types of mental health treatment, and it can be helpful to understand the differences between them. Here are some of the main differences between counseling and other types of mental health treatment:

  • Counseling: Counseling is a broader form of mental health treatment that focuses on helping individuals, couples, families in a confidential environment, to develop coping strategies, improve relationships, or navigate through challenging circumstances.
  • Psychiatry: Psychiatry is the practice of using medicine to treat mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, etc. Psychiatric medications can help regulate brain chemistry and alleviate symptoms of mental illness, and are typically used in conjunction with counseling.
  • Support Groups: These are groups of individuals who come together to provide mutual support for one another. These can be a helpful addition to other forms of mental health treatment, providing individuals with a sense of community and belonging.

What should I do if I’m in crisis and I need help right away?

There are several steps you can take if you’re in crisis and need help right away.

Call a crisis help line: Help Lines are available 24/7 and can provide immediate support and guidance. In the United States, the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline is available at 1-800-273-TALK.
Use a crisis text line in some cases texting can be a more comfortable and accessible way to get help. Crisis text lines, such as the Crisis Text line in the United States, provide free, confidential text support from trained counselors. To use the Crisis Text line, simply text “HOME” to 741741.

Reach out to a trusted friend or family member: Talking to someone who is supportive and understanding can be a helpful first step in getting help during a mental health crisis.

Contact your mental health provider: If you already have a mental health provider, you can contact their office or answering service for immediate support. Some providers have after hours phone support or emergency appointments.

Go to the emergency room: The staff there can provide and initial assessment and connect you with the appropriate mental health resources.
